How to Pull Off the Casual Look
There’s a lot to be said for a man who is able to dress well and who never looks bad I a suit, but the real challenge for men everywhere is the ability to look stylish even when they’re casually dressed.
The casual look is a tough one. If it’s done right, you’ll look like a cool, confident character who cares about his appearance but isn’t overly vain. However, if you get it wrong, there is a good chance that you’ll look like a lazy slob who can’t be bothered with your appearance. If you want to be thought of as the former when you’re having a casual day, check out these tips:
Dress Like a Man
If you want to look like the grown-up, sophisticated man that you are, you don’t always have to wear a suit and tie, but you do always have to dress like an adult, which means ditching the baggy pants and superhero t-shirts. If you want to wear tracksuits, instead of going for cheap, garish ensembles, choose one of the many classy grown up tracksuits from the likes of Armani, and which are in adult shades of black and grey.
Back to Basics
You might love Superman or have a fondness for funny slogans, but if you want to look good, you’re going to have to switch your graphic printed tees for more basic, plain ones. You might think that you’re being quirky with your choice of funny t-shirts, band slogans and quotes from your favorite movie, but most won’t agree, and you’ll look much more classic in a plain black, white or red shirt.
If you like the comfort of t-shirts, but you want your casual look to be a bit on the smarter side, invest in a couple of high-quality polo shirts for the best of both worlds. You can create a smarter look by combining a polo shirt with jeans and shoes, without having to go to too much effort, so it’s worth having a couple in your wardrobe.
Find Jeans That Fit
Jeans are better than joggers if you want to achieve a comfortable casual look that isn’t too sloppy, but you do need to make an effort to find jeans that really fit. So many men, and women wear jeans that are too tight or baggy on the but, which fall down every five seconds or which simply do not flatter the lower half. If you want to look the part, you don’t have to spend a lot of money, but you might have to spend a bit of time trying a few pairs on before you find the perfect jeans.
Sneakers are comfortable and practical, so you’ll be glad to hear they’re fine to wear when you want a casual look, but try to keep them clean and instead of going for those overly styled, bright, garish styles, opt for a more understated, neutral shoe where possible.
You might also want to invest in a good pair of black loafers, which will look good with jeans and allow you to put together a smarter casual outfit when the occasion calls.
Avoid Tacky Accessories
When you’re wearing a nice suit, you can probably get away with wearing a bit of bling, but when you’re wearing a plain old t-shirt and sweatpants, you’re going to look a bit foolish if you try to bling up your outfit too much.
Another accessory that you might want to avoid is the baseball cap. Some men can pull it off, but others look like teenagers. Obviously, if you’re out in the sun or actually at a baseball game, then maybe it won’t be so bad, but otherwise, it’s best to avoid.
Keep it Clean and Tidy
Whether you want to wear a tracksuit, jeans and a polo shirt or your favorite pair of sweatpants, you’ll stand a much better chance of pulling the look off if your clothes are clean, tidy and well looked after. To properly take care of your clothes, throw them in the washer before they get too grimey, air dry them where possible, and most importantly run an iron over them before you put them on. I know casual clothes are supposed to be convenient, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t take some care over them, especially if you’re heading out.
Apart from your choice of clothes, if you take the time to groom yourself daily and hold yourself with confidence, you should have no problem pulling off the casual look.
