First dates are nerve-wracking for everyone involved.

Firstly, there’s the worry that your date won’t show up.

Then you are most probably also stressing about whether she will want the same as you do and whether you will get on well. Finally, there’s the panic of choosing the perfect outfit - this shouldn’t be underestimated.

You see, you only get to make a first impression once, and if it’s not a good one, then you may as well say goodbye to your date there and then. When it comes to choosing an outfit for a date, it’s important to understand that what you wear shows her how you feel about her. Rock up in a pair of trackies and an old t-shirt, and she’ll instantly know that you don’t respect her or want things to go far.

Believe it or not, dressing for a first date doesn’t have to be stressful, all you need to do is dress to impress. That being said, you don’t want to be too dressed up - it can be a tricky area to navigate.

However, if you follow these tips, you can make dressing for a first date much less stressful.

Dress for an occasion

Going on a first date with a woman that you like is an occasion, so dress for it. This doesn’t mean sporting a tie, unless of course, the place that you are going to require it. A nice jacket, however, is a great touch.

Don’t wear a suit. If you’re going to see a show or jazz concert, a suit is acceptable, but apart from that, it’s not. If you turn up in a smart suit, you’ll seem like someone who is uptight. It’s best to opt for a shirt and jean combination.

Wear nice shoes

Ladies love shoes - your date won’t be able to resist checking out yours. If you are wearing a pair of old, scruffy shoes, she’ll notice, and it will put her off.

If you’re going for an evening date, a pair of lace-up shoes or loafers is ideal. For a more casual afternoon date, smart trainers or pumps are acceptable. Despite the type of date that you are going on, flip flops are always a big no-no.

Don’t wear anything too baggy

The ultimate goal of a date is eventually, to see each other in your underwear. It might sound odd, but it’s true. You fancy her, she fancies you, if things go well, at some point, your dating will lead to sex. So it makes sense to give her an idea of what’s under your clothes, by wearing garments that actually, fit you.

Wear a watch

Women are really into accessories, and men who wear them. While a first date probably isn’t an occasion for cuff links - the ultimate male accessory, wearing a watch is ideal.

If you don’t already have a watch, or yours is looking a little worse for wear, check out the Shinola Chronograph range of watches. There are lots of designs to choose from on here, so you should be able to find the perfect style for you.

Don’t go crazy with the aftershave

Yes, women like it when us guys smell nice. However, what they hate is when we smell like we threw a whole bottle of cologne over ourselves. By all means wear your nicest aftershave, just don’t go crazy with it.

Dressing for a first date isn’t easy, but by following the tips above, you can make it less stressful for yourself.
